7 Tips to Help With Job Hunting

With the unemployment rate decreasing and number of available jobs increasing, the market for new career opportunities has become very competitive and quite often, difficult to navigate. Here are 7 Tips to consider while you review career opportunities and navigate the market these next few months.

1. Stand out from the crowd. In a competitive market, an applicant has to separate themselves from the pack. Don’t be like every other applicant, provide an edge, and know what works best for you. Don’t imitate what works best for someone else, because it may not always work for you. Be yourself!

2. Be open-minded. Job titles are exactly that: titles. Don’t judge a book by its cover just because it sounds boring. Take the time to learn the job scope and ask the right questions so you get a grasp of what the position really entails.

3.Be professional everywhere. 92% of employers use social media in the hiring process, what they see on your profile could be the deciding factor of whether you get an interview or not. Integrity is the key word here. Assume everything that is posted on social media sites can be viewed by your next employer. Don’t rely on the privacy settings to bail you out from landing your career. Be professional, act like an adult, and conduct yourself in a way to be respected by all.

4. Envision working in the role. When given the opportunity to interview, talk as if you already work there and see yourself in the role. Don’t overdo it, but use the interview to separate yourself from the crowd. Remember one thing, if you got an interview, you have already stood out amongst the other applicants, so own the interview and envision landing the job.

5.Use social media to your advantage. In the third point I said be careful what you post on social media, now I’m telling you to use it to your advantage. With the birth of social media you can actually use social media platforms to seek out job opportunities. Make sure to follow the companies and industries you see yourself working for and stay connected on the job opportunities they post.

6.Network, Network, Network. Your peers can be your biggest asset to landing that next great career move. You should desire to network with your peers and team members.  These peers can be the reason why you land a great job. Be the professional that comes to mind when they hear about job opportunities. Your peers can offer the honest opinions of your character and work ethic that can either present or close the door to big opportunities.

7.Realistic self-evaluation.  Know your worth and know what you can bring to the table. It’s great to be optimistic and desire a high profile role, but make sure you aren’t an applicant full of empty promises. Make sure you have the skills and commitment to be successful in the role you’re applying for. On the other side of the coin, just because the “perfect job” comes along doesn’t mean take it. Evaluate your role and your surroundings and consider the impact that would happen if you were to take the new role. By closing the door on the “perfect job” could open up other doors to better opportunities for your situation.
