September 2024 | AI in Healthcare

In prior tech corner articles, we spent some time breaking down AI, Artificial Intelligence, and what it is.  In further articles, we took a dive into advancements in fighting cybercrime and internet fraud utilizing new AI and fraud detection technology

We’ll continue our discussion of Artificial Intelligence in this tech corner, however, we’ll focus AI’s integration in the Healthcare industry.

AI is currently being used in multiple facets within the healthcare Industry, most specifically, to improve patient care and outcomes, reduce human error, and assist medical professionals throughout the hospitals.

Some areas where AI continues to be integrated into a normal infrastructure of a healthcare/medical organization are:

  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment
  • Research
  • Patient Experience
  • Decision Making
  • Data Management

As we’ve learned to understand through technological advancements, they always come with a “good” and a “bad.”  While technology advancements “bad” typically revolves around the unknowns with such new technology, here’s a more basic breakdown of the current situation
The Good:

  • Improved diagnostics and precision in medicine
  • Streamlined administrative tasks and workflow enhancements
  • Enhanced capabilities in Research and Development

The Bad

  • Ethical and data privacy concerns with shared data amongst AI platforms
  • Job displacement and challenges incorporating AI with human interactions
  • Overall reliability and trust issues in non-human decision making (i.e no feelings)

AI continues to change the world through its advancements and integration.  The key to AI integration in healthcare will be the ability to coexist with humans, and the “human touch” that goes along with healthcare and patient experience.
